Literature Text

Feminism seems to be synonymous with a man-hater
Or female superiority
So often that we ask ourselves
Why do we even need it?

I'll answer that question. My brother
My father
My (possible) future husband.
Myself.

Your boyfriend
Your uncle
Your male cousin

For feminism is gender neutral,
all opportunities open
To welcome any expression
Any origin, man or woman

My second grade teacher needs feminism.
He was a man. And growing up, I was taught
that it was my responsibility to protect
myself from kidnapping men

And that some men shouldn't be trusted with children
And I was asked if I felt safe around him.
And I did. Until they asked me that.
Who's a feminist anymore? The principal who hired him.

To not see men as monsters, but to be as equally trusted as women,
THAT is feminism

When a professor described to his students
Two resumes described as "ambitious, leadership, and determined"
One signed John
One signed Jane

John was a leader, Jane was too harsh,
especially described as "bitch".
Even as each word
Was exactly the same

Who's a feminist anymore?
The professor is, opening eyes to latent sexism.

This is America, and we say
Women and men are equal, just look
at a successful career woman
and this stay-at-home dad!

But are we looking at an illusion?
I won't prescribe to fantasy
I am looking at reality

I am looking at a culture where as a child I was taught
Men are monsters, so I thought
If my skirt was too short and I got groped
It was my fault.

Cause hey, they can't help themselves, right?
And who are we to bait them
But I will look at them as truly human
and I refuse to believe that.

Or when an abusive mother keeps her kids
Even though there is a responsible father
Because a court system is gender biased

Or how about how two boys were coddled
While crying with a conviction of rape
During a public trial of assault
Begging the girl they abused to forgive

And I thought, what of the girl? Why don't we hear about her?
Wasn't she hurt here?
And who taught those boys to act that way?
Who told them that aggression like that was ok?

Or if we look at expression of feminine, masculine,
Ruby the riveter paved the way, but now
How come it is normal for a girl to wear boy clothes, be a tomboy, that's ok
But a man wearing a dress, we just want to look away

And why are we so culture blind as to think
Feminism isn't needed, as long as America is ok?
What about Malala, shot in the head
for daring to go to school in Pakistan

Who's a feminist anymore?
The supporting male relatives
who drove her to and from school each day.

Who's a feminist anymore? I am.
And if you are offended by that, then you need to
redefine feminism
So yeah, I am just generally opposed to stereotypes. I think my tomboy phase was half because of feeling I would suck at being girly, and half because I didn't want to seem weak. Why do we think girly things are weak at all? Why does masculine mean strength? I feel stronger now than ever, because I am comfortable in how I express myself, whether blue, black or pink. I wear what I want. Not totally related to this peice I wrote, but I still think it is important to state.

Also, important and awesome slam poetry here that inspired this. www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNPaos…

I favorited this last year and am now rereading it, and I have to say, I love the last stanza. The whole reason I do not consider myself a feminist is because there are so many different interpretations of the word that there really is no real definition of it, and I'd rather not have my beliefs misunderstood by people who might define the term feminism a different way (e.g. 'man-hating')

That's why I like the "redefine feminism" bit. Some people think it's solely a women's rights group, others say it supports rights of both men and women, and some people have completely different opinions on what it is. Either we need a new term or, like you said, redefine it in a way that's consistent and accurate so people don't misunderstand.

Personally, I'd rather be a supporter of equal rights and not need a special name for it. But that's just me :)
